What are the most valuable stamps in the world?

The record holders are a handful of classic stamps that survive in single figures or low dozens. Each sale below is a public auction result or a documented trade, and prices include the buyer's premium.

Why are these stamps worth so much?

Because almost none exist and thousands of collectors want one. Most record stamps were printed by mistake, sold for only a short time, or produced locally in tiny numbers.

• A printing error: the Treskilling Yellow was printed in the color meant for another value, and the Inverted Jenny has its airplane upside down. See error stamps worth money.
• A tiny local printing: the British Guiana 1c magenta was a stopgap issue printed by a local newspaper when a stamp shipment ran late.
• An experiment that stopped: the Z Grill was an early test of pressing a grid into the paper, and only two of the 1¢ value survive.
• A withdrawn stamp: “The Whole Country is Red” was pulled within half a day because its map was wrong. See Chinese stamp values.
• Fragile survivors: the Hawaiian Missionaries were printed on paper so thin that most known copies are damaged.

What stamps are worth money in an ordinary collection?

Not the famous rarities, realistically, but scarcer relatives of them. In a typical album, the stamps worth money are classic 19th-century issues in good condition, high face values, errors and unused stamps with full gum.

1. Classic issues before about 1900, especially unused or lightly cancelled copies with all their perforations.
2. High face values from any era, which were printed in smaller numbers than letter-rate stamps.
3. Errors and varieties: missing colors, inverted centers, imperforate stamps and printing shifts.
4. Top condition: a well-centered, fresh stamp can be worth many times a poor copy. See condition grading.
5. Postal history: early covers with clear postmarks, unusual routes or scarce rates.

Which famous stamps are worth less than people think?

The Penny Black, the 1993 Elvis stamp and most Washington and Franklin definitives are famous but common. Millions survive, so ordinary copies sell for modest sums.

Fame and value aren't the same thing. More than 68 million Penny Blacks were printed, so a used copy with small margins is affordable. The Elvis stamp was printed in the hundreds of millions. The value in Washington and Franklin stamps sits in specific varieties, not the everyday printings.

Could my stamp be one of the rare ones?

It's very unlikely, and look-alikes are common. Every famous rarity has been forged or reproduced, so a match on the design alone proves nothing.

The known copies of the great rarities are recorded one by one, and experts track where each one is. What turns up in family albums is usually a reproduction, a souvenir sheet or the common stamp of the same design. The 2013 Inverted Jenny souvenir sheet, sold by the US Postal Service for $12, is the classic example.
