What's the difference between catalogue value and what a stamp sells for?
Catalogue value is a reference retail price for a stamp in a stated condition. Real sale prices are often lower, especially for common stamps, and can be higher for exceptional copies.
Catalogues such as Scott give the cheapest stamps a minimum value, which reflects a dealer's cost of handling a stamp rather than what one would fetch on its own. That's why a stamp listed at the catalogue minimum may sell for a fraction of a cent in a bulk lot.
At the top end the reverse happens. A stamp with perfect centering and fresh color can sell for a multiple of catalogue value, because condition-conscious buyers compete for the best copies.
